Just when I thought I had all my business stuff* in place, events have conspired to make me get my act together.
It’s not that I didn’t have my act together before, just that I’ve now taken it to a whole new level. You could call it the universe giving me a big kick up the business butt.
It began with the offer of some work with a large corporation, helping with their corporate comms. We’d worked together many years ago and I always enjoyed working with them, so of course I jumped at the chance.
But saying yes didn’t mean I could simply show up and start working. Big businesses have big contracts and big processes in place when it comes to, well… everything.
What followed was several weeks of contract negotiations, hunting out ways to make my business fit into their contractor boxes (both on their part and mine), sorting out insurances and financial details… well, I won’t bore you with all the details, but it took several weeks to get everything sorted to everyone’s satisfaction.
Some people might find such a process painful but I prefer to think of it as an opportunity in disguise. As well as having a great project to work on, I now have an excellent lawyer, all the kinds of insurances a business like mine should have (and a fabulous insurance broker), I’m registered for GST and I’ve practically moved in with my accountant.
Plus, I am now set up to work with large organisations that have lots of boxes to be ticked before you can get to work. Best of all, I get to work with one of my favourite clients from many years ago.
The universe really does work in wonderful ways.
* ‘business stuff’ being the highly technical term referring to all the things people who just want to get on with their work avoid whenever possible.
